Just like humans, dogs have needs. While every dog is unique, they all need the same things to live a happy and a healthy life.

Here’s a list of things all dogs need. All these are essential for your dog’s overall health and well-being.

Food

Dogs need a high quality nutritious diet and clean drinking water. Feed your dogs with premium quality dry foods. If you are to feed them “people food”, make sure it does not constitute to more than 10% of their daily diet. Clean, fresh water should also be available at all times.

Shelter

Your dog needs a warm, quiet place to sleep or retreat to when he needs a break. Give them a bed, a crate or a kennel. If your dog spends a portion of their time outdoors, give them a dog house.

Exercise

Dogs need exercise to stimulate their minds, burn calories, release excess energy and stay healthy. Some dogs act out because they have too much energy. If your dogs exhibit destructive behaviour such as chewing, digging etc., they probably lack exercise. Daily physical exercise can help solve behavioural problems.

Health

Dogs need proper health care. Find a veterinarian that you can trust and visit regularly. Try to bring your dog to the vet at least twice a year to make sure he’s in top shape. Remember, dogs tend to conceal pain and illnesses. By the time you notice there’s something wrong with your dog, it might be too late.

Attention

Most people think that if they don’t buy new toys for their dogs or fail to pet them at every opportunity they have, they’re not giving them enough attention. But attention is not just about getting them a new toy or petting them, it’s also about meeting their physical and social needs.

Dogs are social creatures. They are also in need of companionship. Consider employing a dog sitter or a dog walker if you leave your dog alone in the house most of the time.
