Owning a pet is not just as easy as providing them food. They also have other needs, including exercise. All dogs need exercise in order to remain happy and healthy. Unfortunately, many of them are not getting enough exercise. In fact, studies reveal that 35% of pets today are overweight.

Get fit and have fun by working out with your pup. If you and Fido are getting a little bored with the same activities day after day, here are a few activities to shake up your routine.

Swimming

With summer months just around the corner, this is the perfect time to take a dip with your canine companion.  Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs know how to swim. Supervise your dog at all times.

Hiking

If you love nature and you’re ready to take on a new adventure, then you might want to consider taking your dog hiking. This allows you and your pet to explore the world while reinforcing the bond you share.

Hiking can be hard. Talk to your veterinarian and make sure that your dog is in the right physical shape before heading out for your hike. Also, don’t forget to bring lots of water.

Go for a run

Just like humans, dogs need intense cardiovascular workout. This is important so as to keep their blood pressure in check, increase bone density, minimize stress and keep their hearts healthy.

Running with your pet is a great way to bond with one another while staying healthy. Be sure to keep your dog on a leash during your run.

Go up and down the stairs

This will not only help sculpt your legs, it will also help burn off your pup’s breakfast. Go up and down the stairs with your pet by your side. For a more challenging workout, we suggest that you vary the way you step. You can run the steps sideways or take two steps at a time.
