Since the ancient times, humans have shared a unique bond with animals. Today, humans’ love affair with animals continues, along with their mutually beneficial relationship.

The benefits of owning a pet goes beyond having a loyal friend that curls up at your feet. Owning a pet can be wonderful for your health. As a matter of fact, a number of studies have shown that owning a pet can provide its owners with numerous health benefits. Read on and find out some of the reasons why you should open your home to a furry friend and how you can benefit from it.

Breathe easier

This may come as a surprise to most people. A study that was conducted by James E. Gern, a University of Wisconsin-Madison pediatrician, revealed that having a pet at home can actually lower a child’s risk of developing pet-related allergies by as much as 33%.

Researchers also found out that children who are exposed to animals early tend to have stronger immune system. However, this may not be the case for adults who are already suffering from longstanding allergies. The said study was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Alleviates pain

Pets may be considered as the best medicine, especially if you are dealing with chronic pain like arthritis or migraine.

Owning a pet helps reduce its owner’s anxiety. The less anxious you are, the less pain you feel. In fact, one study revealed that patients who use pet therapy while recovering from surgery may need less pain medication compared to those who do not.

Stay heart healthy

The National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have both conducted heart-related studies on people who owns a pet. Through this study, they found out that pet owners exhibited decreased blood pressure, triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

Research also revealed that pet owners who have previously experienced a heart attack have better recovery rates. These benefits are mostly linked to the fact that these pets help reduce their owner’s stress level.
