Summer is a great time for enjoying the great outdoors with your four-legged pal. But it’s also a time to be cautious and conscientious. Dogs suffer from heatstroke, too. This is especially true in extremely hot weather. So, it is up to you to keep them safe and comfortable this summer.

Provide ways to keep your dog cool

As much as they love the sun, dogs can quickly become overheated. Dogs do not perspire like we do, which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke.

Always provide your dog with adequate shade. On hot, humid days, it is best to bring your dog inside. Keep your dog cool by taking them for a swim, shaving their coats or letting them play in the sprinkler in your backyard. Frozen dog treats are also beneficial during hot, summer days.

Keep your dog hydrated

Always provide your dog access to cool, fresh drinking water. Keep a few buckets of water available in different parts of the house or different locations around the yard just in case they drink all the water out of one bucket or spill it.

Check your dog for ticks

The presence of ticks and other insects is another summer pet safety issue. They can be very dangerous for your pet as they can cause serious illness.

Prevent these pests from harming your pet by checking your dogs for ticks once in a while. Monthly spot flea and tick treatment can also help.

Exercise your dog early in the day

All dogs need exercise to stay healthy, but taking Fido for a walk when it’s 100 degrees outside can be very dangerous. Asphalts can be extremely hot and can burn your dog’s paws. Because of that, special cautions need to be taken when exercising your dog.

Consider taking your dog out early in the morning. If you can’t do that, you can schedule exercise late afternoon or in the evening.
